Song Tides
An ongoing project reflecting the sea, tides, weather and marine life around the Cromarty Firth and people's connection to them.
The project's first creative output was an installation exhibited as part of the Black Isle Collective summer exhibition in 2020 at the Cromarty Stables Gallery.
Before being exhibited, three recycled steel plates were tied to the harbour wall and submerged in the Cromarty Firth tidal zone for three months. The changes to the surfaces of the metal were recorded using underwater filming and photography.
The installation Song Tides consisted of three rusted, steel plates, hanging from the rafters, using recycled harbour rope, a steel bath containing seawater and a film and audio of underwater documentation of the process, projected onto the surface of the seawater in the steel bath. The combined height of the rope, with its reflection, came to 3.7 metres in total (the tidal range in the Cromarty Firth)
