Spiral Headdresses: Summer Solstice

Summer Solstice 2022

Headwear spirals made for wild swimmers to mark the natural rituals of nature beginning with mid-summer, solstice 2022

The spiral represents the earth's journey around the sun and holds ancient spiritual and psychological connections to ideas of rebirth and transformation.  A Fibonacci spiral is a magical number, a phenomenon in nature that is reflected in the macro and micro on earth and the cosmos. In the marine world, it can be seen in shells and waves.

The experience of wearing the headdress enables the sea bather to hold her head up high. Her fellow bathers can easily spot her, as the spiral’s distinctive shape appears as a silhouette on the horizon.

Headdresses were made from reclaimed steel during a residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Aberdeenshire, in 2022,  and were modelled by the workers.

Rosie Newman's poem 'Song Tides' was engraved onto the surface of the steel. The poem was inspired by the extinct Cromarty dialect, which included many sea-faring words to describe conditions, and marine creatures, from a time when local people were intrinsically connected to the sea.

The headdress designed for winter was inspired by the Hope Spot Residency in Argyll. On the headband are the words DOCHAS meaning Hope in Gaelic. The interior is engraved with marine plants and animals seen while snorkelling in the Hope Spot, inlcuding spittal stars, sea grass and sausage worms.
